50-60 tonnes of shrimps per day are processed through Polar Seafood’s 6,000 m² repacking plant in Vester Hassing, Denmark, focusing on rational large-scale operation and good hygiene. About 2000 m² of the plant is given over to packing and the entire plant employs approx. 35 personnel. “Each workstation is designed to provide good ergonomics and a healthy working environment, mea- ning that the personnel spend more time nowadays inspecting and operating the machines than doing manual work,” explains Ivan Nielsen, Project Manager at Polar Seafood. Job rotation amongst the plant workers ensures a large degree of flexibility for the plant, and the personnel a dynamic and varied working day.
Top class hygiene
Carnitech signed a contract earlier this year with Nielsen to supply equipment to the new plant. Nielsen’s role as Project Manager is to oversee planning and construction of Polar Seafood’s new plants and upgrading of existing ones. Carnitech have installed conveyor belt transport systems, two glazers, feeder belt, a skimming line and two tunnel freezers at the plant, all of which are dedicated to the production and repacking of shrimps. The belt conveyor is an easy-to-clean system especially developed for Polar Seafood’s repacking requirements. What makes it particularly easy to clean is the open and light construction with no corners where dirt and prawn remains can collect. Hygiene and bacteriology are absolute top class.
From tray to retail packaging
The frozen shrimps mainly come from Polar Seafood’s own factory trawlers in 5 kg trays. These trays are repacked into retail packaging according to customer’s particular requirements and specifications. The shrimps arrive at the cold store in the 5 kg trays and are then transported to the glazing line, where they are manually placed on the feeder belt. This transports them to the two Carnitech glazers and onwards to after-freezing in the two tunnel freezers which freeze them down to around -20C.
Highly accurate weight
Fresh from the freezer, the shrimps move on to packing area where they are packed into retail packaging. When they reach the skimming line, manned by three personnel, they are checked very precisely to ensure each 5 kg tray from the trawlers does not exceed 5 kg. The trays are weighed, skimmed and then check-weighed once more to ensure a accurate weight of 5 kg when they exit this line.
Advanced factory trawlers
The Polar Seafood group was founded in 1984 as the sales and marketing organisation for a number of independent Greenlandic trawlers. The company is now the owner of a fleet of large and technologically advanced factory trawlers that fish for coldwater shrimps (Pandalus Borealis), cod, haddock, coalfish, redfish and Greenlandic halibut. Almost 97% of the production emerging from Polar Seafood’s repacking at Vester Hassing goes for export to such countries as Russia, Sweden, France, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK.
